Five equal roles: Producer, Importer, Brand Owner, Distributor, Wholesaler
Each role has different evidence and none ranks above another. Learn what each role proves and the evidence behind it.
Biome recognizes five equal roles: Producer, Importer, Brand Owner, Distributor, and Wholesaler. None ranks above another, none is called more authentic, and there is no first-hand label. Each role only appears after its required evidence has been checked.
Many people imagine the supply chain as a ladder: producers at the top, wholesalers at the bottom. That view misleads. A distributor holding stock in five cities is often more useful to a reseller than a small producer with limited capacity. Roles are categories of function, not ranks.
What each role proves
| Role | What it means | Example evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Producer | Makes its own products | Production site video, production capacity, technical product knowledge |
| Importer | Brings in products from abroad officially | Import documents, business legality, inbound shipment history |
| Brand Owner | Owns a brand, regardless of who makes it | Brand ownership, trademark documents, relationships with production facilities |
| Distributor | Distributes producers' or importers' products in bulk | Agreements or proof of partnership with product owners, stock capacity |
| Wholesaler | Sells in bulk to resellers | Large sales history, proof of transactions with other resellers |
Why there is no first-hand label
A first-hand label is a claim anyone can make, including people who actually buy from someone else — precisely one of the problems Biome addresses. What gets checked is not the word a supplier chooses, but the role and the evidence behind it. A brand owner may not manufacture their own products — and that is not hidden, because the role is still legitimate.
For producers, the business type is also shown
The producer category covers diverse realities: workshops, home industries, artisans, farmers, livestock keepers, bakeries, and factories. The business type is displayed so resellers know what to expect from the scale and method of production.
Choosing the right role for your needs
- Need the best price for large volume and don't mind waiting for production? Look for a producer.
- Need foreign products through an official path? Look for an importer.
- Need a brand the market already knows with consistent quality? Look for a brand owner.
- Need ready-to-ship stock in large, varied quantities? Look for a distributor.
- Need flexible purchasing without production terms? Look for a wholesaler.
Frequently asked questions
Is a producer always cheaper than a distributor?
Not always. Price depends on volume, stock, and each party's policy. What matters is knowing your counterpart's role so you can judge whether the price makes sense for it.
Can one business have more than one role?
Yes. Roles are derived from evidence. A business can legitimately be both a producer and a brand owner, with each displayed through its own evidence.
